Food distribution to IDPs in schools of Peshawar circle by ERU

07, June 2009

PESHAWAR: The Emergency Response Unit (ERU) established by the government of NWFP for controlling and monitoring the relief operation has distributed relief kits consisting of food and non-food items among the IDPs living in schools in and around the City.

According to a handout issued here on Sunday, Provincial Relief Commissioner and Incharge of ERU Muhammad Azam Khan has issued special instructions to the officials to provide immediate relief to the IDPs of Malakand Division in whose areas army has been conducting operation against the miscreants.

The ERU has distributed relief kits among 85 families residing in 13 schools of Badabher. At least 432 families residing in 56 schools situated in the cantonment area have been provided the relief goods.

More than 373 families were given accommodation in 58 schools of Chughulpoora. Relief kits have also been distributed among them. 95 schools in the City have been declared as IDPs camps where 981 families have been given accommodation. At least 154 families have been residing in 38 schools of Daudzai. More than 267 families have living in 38 schools of Hayatabad.

Matra has 10 schools where 42 families have been given accommodation and Matni has six schools where 25 families have been provided accommodation. The ERU has provided enough relief kits to last for one week to the IDPs families.

It is pertinent to mention here as a result of current military operation, hundreds of thousands of civilians from Malakand Division have left their homes for safer places in Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Malakand and Charsadda-based IDP camps. This sudden migration is the largest in country’s history and support needs to be provided to the IDPs.

Provincial Relief Commissioner Muhammad Azam Khan showed determination that the government will work to assist these people because they might suffer more problems in summer. He said that IDPs desperately need tents, medicine, food, water and other necessities of daily life. Relief Operation, reconstruction and rehabilitation will definitely take time and money, he noted.
